Between 5th and 13th July, Denia celebrates its patron festivities in honour of the Santisima Sangre. Its “Bous a la Mar”, literally “bulls in the sea”, is central to the Fiestas and has been declared a Festivity of National Touristic Interest. A square bullring is built in the fishing harbour for the Fiestas, with the side by the water left open. Young bulls enter the ring and an original and entertaining show takes place as willing participants tease the young bull until it, or them, end up in the water.
The Valencian town of Dénia works itself up into a frenzy for the much-anticipated Toros/Bous a la Mar. This atavistic idiotcy is staged annually to commemorate the Day of the Sacred Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ (el Día de la Santísima a Sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo).
